O’CONNELL, Charles Helston (Helt), age 80, of Barrington, formerly of East Baccaro, passed away on Tuesday, June3, 2014 at the Bay Side Home, Barrington. Helt was born in East Baccaro, the firstborn child of Russell O’Connell and Bertha (Smith) O’Connell. Afflicted with polio at the young age of two, it never stopped him from living a full life. He even spent time fishing with his grandfather, Charlie and he spent time in Halifax learning the craft of watch repair. As a younger man he rode his bicycle around Baccaro regularly and visited with many friends and neighbours. He played darts for a while and won some trophies while doing so. He was a big fan of CB radios at one time and loved country music from the 50’s and 60’s, also he loved to do his word search puzzles. Although he never married he was a father figure to many of his nieces and nephews. Helt was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Lorena (Sit) and sister Faye. He will be remembered and missed by his brother, Layton O’Connell, Upper Clyde; sister, Violet Pierce, West Pubnico, sister, Paulette Tulk, Havelock, Ontario; 18 nieces and nephews; several great nieces and great nephews, especially Colton and Niketa with whom he was especially close. A special thanks to the staff at Bay Side Home for their wonderful care of Helt in his last years. A memorial service will take place 2:00 p.m., Sunday at the H.M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Rosalin Nickerson Care Fund.
