BOWER, Finvola (Finn) Mhairi, Lower Ohio - Our dear Finn left this world at Roseway Hospital in Shelburne early on the morning of June 3, 2014, in the loving presence of her husband, son and daughter-in-law. Finn was born in Timmons, Ontario on November 28, 1940 and grew up in Musquodoboit, Nova Scotia. Displaying early signs of the lively intelligence that would characterize her entire life, Finn received a Nova Scotia Talent Trust Grant and studied voice at McGill University under Mr. Bernard Diamant. During the 1950’s and 1960’s, Finn both travelled extensively with Dr. Helen Creighton, and appeared several times on television and in NFB film works as a composer and singer of traditional folk songs. During her varied career, Finn taught children at the school for the blind and subsequently worked with learning disabled children. Shortly after moving to Shelburne in the late 1970’s, Finn entered a new chapter of her life as the Curator for the Shelburne County Museum, a job she fulfilled with delight and joy for over three decades. Many, many former Shelburne area students and their teachers fondly remember her in this capacity. Authors such as Lawrence Hill have acknowledged the scholarly assistance she provided them in their research at this museum. Finn lives on in the hearts of her husband Brian, son Andrew and daughter-in-law Lisa. She is also survived by her mother, Sadie, her three sisters, Maureen, Lynn, and Helen, and her brother Angus as well as several nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by her sister-in-law, Virginia Fennell and her brother and sister-in-law, Cliff and Suzanne MacKay; her aunt and uncle Helen and Gordon Higgins and the very many wonderful friends she and Brian have made during their lives. She was predeceased by her father, Fred Redden and her two brothers, Colin and Roderick Michael. At Finn’s request there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne. A tribute in her honor will be announced at a later date.
