Passed on: June 1st, 2014
James Lester Shanahan, Sydney, passed away June 1, 2014, following a brief illness, his wife Nilda, as always, by his side.
Born April 16, 1920, he was the son of the late Augustus 'Gus' Allan Shanahan and Mary Blanche (Coffey).
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Nilda (nee Biechele), daughter Leslie, granddaughter, Catherine Shanahan MacNeil, whom he adored and many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by six siblings, Harold, Marie (LeVangie), Emily (Sullivan), Irene (LeVangie), Myrtle (Sutherland), Rita (Doncaster) and beloved grandson, Donald James 'D.J.' MacNeil.
Jim served four years overseas after attending RMC. He started Eastern Flying Services on Sydney Airport, creating opportunity and fond memories for many, with the Flying School, Charter Service, search and rescue, forestry and cable patrols, first air ambulance on the island and the Sydney Flying Club.
Continuing to study throughout the years, Jim was an accomplished pilot and engineer, licensed for both on the varied aircraft he owned, including the Bell helicopter. From a Labrador sealing expedition, to ensuring Santa’s annual arrival for the children of Sydney, there were many fun adventures in the 60’s with “the chopper.” His passion for aviation was contagious.
Jim was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus.
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Jim shared a full and happy life with his family and friends and enjoyed their many visits until he passed away peacefully into 'D.J.'s open arms.
A private visitation and cremation have taken place. Rev. Gerald Curry, SFM shall conduct the memorial service at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mental Health Nova Scotia.
