Gregory Urban Johnson
Born In: Chapel Island
Passed in: Eskasoni
Passed on: June 8th, 2014
Greg Johnson joyfully ascended to the spirit world on June 8, 2014, at 8:27 a.m. He was a dedicated member of the Baha’i Faith, of which he spoke of passionately.
Born in Chapel Island, he was the son of Margaret (Johnson) Morris and Edward Paul.
His family knew he was gifted because he spoke Mi’kmaq when he was six months old. People would come from all around to see the baby who could speak his language fluently. He worked hard all his life. As a youth he and his brother, Ernest, cut lumber, fished and hunted with their grandfather, Noel. He went to the Maritime School of Social Work and was a social services officer for all of the reserves of mainland Nova Scotia. He was one of the founding members of the Union of Nova Scotia Indians and Mi’kmaq Family Services. Greg had his practitioners license in NLP and compassionately worked with people who had been through traumatic experiences. He was a self-taught electrician and he set up radio stations on native reserves throughout Eastern Canada. He worked for the Eskasoni Band in numerous departments and was instrumental in major developments throughout the community. Greg especially enjoyed telling stories to friends, family and guests. He was a recreational pilot who loved to fly. He liked to metal detect, pan for gold, play chess, carve, go camping, and he loved to study the history and language of the Mi’kmaq people.
Greg is survived by his wife Linda Gray; his children, Margie, Rosie (Clarence), Mary Belle, Greg Jr., Jared and Quanah; his brothers, Ernest (Miney) Johnson, Cameron Paul, Membertou), Peter Paul, Eskasoni; his sisters, Katherine Sorbey (Listiguj), Loretta Sylliboy, Eskasoni; his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Greg was predeceased by his first wife Cecelia May Johnson and his sister Catherine Googoo, Membertou.
