We, the family, regret to announce the passing of Robert William Grant on Friday, June 13, 2014, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Ross Ferry on May 7, 1929, he was the son of the late William D. Grant and Mary Carmichael.
Robert was self-employed, operating Grant’s Trucking for over 50 years, and shared the family business, Grant’s Store, with his brother Lloyd.
He worked from one end of Cape Breton to the other and was involved in the construction of the Canso Causeway and the Seal Island bridge.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, St. Mark’s Chapter No. 35 for over 50 years, an honorary life member of the Ross Ferry Volunteer Fire Department and an elder of Knox Presbyterian Church, Ross Ferry.
Robert was a humble man who was able to find joy in the simple things in life, being surrounded by his family, conversations with friends in the store, spending time in his backhoe and enjoying a few indulgences, especially baked potatoes and Diet Pepsi.
Robert is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley (Maloney); as well as three children, Brenda (Colin) and Charlene (Emmett), both of Ross Ferry, David (Kim), Big Bras d’Or; four grandchildren, Travis, Ryan, William, Avery 'Skipper' and two great-grandchildren, Parker and Journey; his brother, Lloyd (Katherine), Ross Ferry; his sisters, Mildred (Cyril) MacLean, Edwardsville, Betty Grant, Montreal.
Besides his parents, Robert was predeceased by his mother-in-law Jessie Maloney and brother-in-law, Brian Maloney.
The family would like to thank all departments of the Northside General Hosptial, Harbourview Hospital, EHS, members of the Ross Ferry Volunteer Fire Department and special thanks to Dr. Bernie MacIntosh, for the great care he received from all of you over numerous years.
Visitation for Robert will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Monday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A Funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2014 from Knox Presbyterian Church, Ross Ferry with Rev. Peter MacDonald and Rev. Vern Boutilier officiating.
