Winston Churchill White

Passed away suddenly June 13, 2014 at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital following a brief illness, in the presence of his ever-loving wife Deborah Louise White (nee Ryan) and sons Jacob Daniel White and Richard Anthony White. Born in Kauk Harbour, Labrador on December 19, 1941, the son of Richard White of St. John's and Judith Pauline White (nee Hunter) of Nain Bay. Winston was predeceased by his parents, his brother Douglas and wife Lizetta, sisters Evelyn and Ruth, and Winston's father-in-law John F. Ryan. Winston is survived by Deborah, Jacob and Richard (Jennifer Nitsmin), his sisters Pauline Paton in Iqaluit and Fay McQueeney in Maine (U.S.A.), his niece Pauline Dicker (nee White) in Nain, as well as a large circle of family and friends from far and wide including Winston's mother-in-law Rosamund Ryan, sister-in-law Jacqueline Ryan and brother-in-law Fr. Robert Ryan, and a number of special nephews, nieces and cousins in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. Winston worked in various commercial enterprises, media, and as a Broadcaster on CBC Radio at their stations in Goose Bay, St. John's and Iqaluit. He served as an Executive Assistant to several cabinet ministers in the Newfoundland and Labrador government and as Manager Labrador Liaison with the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Justice. Winston had a passionate love for "The Big Land", the affectionate description he coined for Labrador. He was a Registered Guide and he wrote extensively about matters of importance to Labrador and its people, both past, present and future. He served on a number of different boards related to the preservation and conservation of Labrador's natural environment and culture. He had an extensive and life-long love and concern for Labrador and Northern Canada and the people who call these vast regions their home. Winston received recognition and awards for his outstanding contribution to community service and was well known as a local writer and musician. Winston was held in high esteem and dearly loved by his immediate and extended family and all those whose lives he touched. He will be greatly missed. A celebration of Winston's life will take place in both St. John's and in Goose Bay at a date to be announced.
