Kenneth John Mitchell – aged 82, of Wolfville, died on June 16, 2014, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Victoria, BC, he was the son of the late Harold Frederick Mitchell and Helen Olive (Cousins) Mitchell. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on May 7, 1951 and retired on September 23, 1980 with the rank of Warrant Officer. During his twenty nine year service in the Infantry he made Private five times and served in The Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary’s) of the 1st Canadian Highland Battalion, the 1st Battalion, The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada and 2nd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment. He served two tours of duty with NATO in North West Germany, the UN Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus, service in Jamaica and various bases across Canada. While stationed at base Gagetown in New Brunswick, he was twice elected and served six years on the Oromocto Town Council and was Deputy Mayor during his second term. In addition, during the time he was stationed at Base Gagetown, he was the Director of the Oromocto Minor Baseball Association for seven years, a member of the Board of Directors for the Oromocto Minor Hockey Association for six years, Charter Member and Treasurer for the Oromocto Chamber of Commerce for three years, he served six years as the Treasurer for the Oromocto and Area United Way Committee, three years on the Board of Directors for the Oromocto Public Library, was a member of the New Brunswick Provincial/Municipal Council for six years. Chairman of the New Brunswick/Municipal Labor Relations and Information Council for three years and served two years as Treasurer and one year as Chairman of the Oromocto Pioneer Days Committee. He was also involved in many more volunteer organizations while stationed in New Brunswick. After serving twelve years in the infantry of The Black Watch he was trained and transferred to the Administration Branch of that Unit and was appointed Manager of the CFB Gagetown Credit Union. Six months prior to his honorable release he rejoined his second family with those he served with in The Canadian Scottish, The Black Watch and The Royal Canadian Regiment. After retirement from the Canadian Armed Forces, he and his family moved to Wolfville where he was employed for five years as the Administrator at Landmark East School in Wolfville and three years as Office Manager at the Coldbrook Ready Mix Limited. During this period he served as President and sixteen years as Secretary/Treasurer of The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada Association, Atlantic Branch. He was a member of the C.D. Lumsden Branch #74 of the Royal Canadian Legion, a member of The Canadian Scottish (Princess Mary’s) Regimental Association, a member of the Armed Forces Pensioners/Annuitants of Canada and a life member of The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada Association, Atlantic Branch. He retired from active employment in October 1988 and enjoyed walking, gardening, reading and very much enjoyed playing cards. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting, long distance running, playing soccer, broomball and baseball. During the period of 1984 to 2004 he and his wife organized and ran card parties at the Wolfville Legion and the communities of Gaspereau and Melanson. Above everything else, he enjoyed family gatherings and visits from friends. First and foremost, Ken’s greatest treasure was his wife, sons and daughters, their spouses, grandchildren and great grandson whom he always held very close to his heart. He had a great sense of humor, generous spirit, stubbornness, a very strong will and would be the first in line to help anyone. Ken’s day was complete whenever he could bring a smile to someone’s face. He is survived by his cherished and loving wife of 56 years, the former Barbara Patricia Allen; two daughters, Elizabeth Joy (Richard) Scott, Canaan and their daughters, Lindsay and Alicia; Alicia’s son, Zachary Allen Scott; Patricia Ann Davis, Kanata, ON and her daughter, Terilyn; two sons, Stanley Allen (Christine), New Minas and their daughter, Danielle and son, Devan; Wesley James (Tammy), Wolfville and their daughter, Salina and son, Douglas; three sisters, Kathleen (John Patterson), Malahat, BC; Marion Jack, Saanichton, BC; Joan (Ronald) Reid, Dartmouth; many, many nieces and nephews. Also left to mourn is Barb and Ken’s adopted third world son Jose Adad Martinez Castro, Managua, Nicaragua. He was predeceased by an infant son, Harold; sister, Eileen (Alex) Thomas, Lantz, BC; brothers, George (Donald) Mitchell, while serving as an Air Gunner with the RCAF during WWll over enemy held territory and Harold (Ray) Mitchell of Sidney, BC, wounded while serving with the South Saskatchewan Regiment. In addition he was predeceased by sisters-in-law, Johanna Allen, Dorothy Corkum, Ena Rodgers, Lily Allen, Eva Mitchell, Sheila Allen and Etta Allen; brothers-in-law, Jack Gowan, Alex Thomas, Douglas Jack, Carl Corkum, Joseph Allen, Glen Allen, Charles Allen, Murray Brown and John Rogers. He is also survived by the following in-laws; Hilda Allen, Beverly Brown, Rosalind (Gill) Moreau, Audrey (Tony Stirling) Dorey, Leslie (Charolotte) Allen, Alton Allen, Stephen (Maxine) Allen, Bud Allen and Paul (Margaret) Allen. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2014 in the White Family Funeral Home where a memorial service followed by a reception was held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2014, Reverend Gary Manthorne officiating. Burial took place in the Gaspereau Cemetery following the service. Donations in memory may be made to Operation Smile or to a charity of your choice.
