Daniel MacPherson of Calgary, Alta. passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the age of 78 years.
Dan was born and raised in Glace Bay, N. S. attending New Aberdeen Public School, where he excelled both academically and in various sports including, baseball, rugby, track & field and hockey. Dan joined the Air Force at the age of 17 on May 21, 1953 and served until the time of his accident. He left the Air Force on March 21, 1955. Although short in duration, Dan always spoke about those that served and gave their lives for our freedom. He was involved with the legion and contributed in many ways including organizing poppies and Remembrance Day ceremonies.
After his time in the Air Force, he worked in various fields including the introduction of electronic beverage dispensing. Dan travelled numerous times across Canada and the United States making his way from Calgary to Glace Bay and back. He spent much of his time at the horse races, which he loved.
Dan will be greatly missed by his son, Greg MacPherson (Colinda) and daughters, Charlotte MacPherson-Levesque (Joe) and Michelle MacPherson (Randy) of Calgary; his former wife, Mary MacPherson (nee Born); as well as his grandchildren, Paul, Nolan, Taylor, Austin, Ellie, Spencer, Farrah, Abbey, Sophie, Major and Risto; sisters, Gertrude 'Tootsie', Isabel and Joan; brothers, Lem (Donna), Gus (Vera) and friend Steve Caissie.
Dan was predeceased by his grandson, Daniel Paul MacPherson; his parents, Gertrude Mae (nee Boutilier) and Thomas Clarke MacPherson and sister, Emily; brothers, William (Margie), Neil (Orma), Mark (Shirley), Tommy (Agnes) and Johnny; and his loving friend, Greta Miles, who passed away unexpectedly on June 20, 2014.
Funeral services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, Alta., on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery in the “Field of Honour”.
