William 'Jimmy' Hawkins

Passed in: Sydney Mines
Passed on: June 30th, 2014

It is with heavy hearts and sadness that we announce the passing of William 'Jimmy' Hawkins on Saturday, June 30, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by his family.
Born in 1933, Jimmy was the son of the late John and Mary (Laffin) Hawkins.
Jimmy was an avid sports fan and could be found watching his beloved Leafs or Blue Jays whenever a game was on. He also enjoyed the time he spent playing darts and tarabish with his friends at the Royal Canadian Legion in Sydney Mines where he was a member, but what he enjoyed most was the company of his family, especially his grandchildren where he could be caught sneaking them a sweet treat every now and then. Jim retired from the coal mines in 1992 after spending 42 years underground.
He will always be remembered by his family and friends for being a great husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, father-in-law and friend. He was a kind and gentle spirit who would give whatever he had to help someone in need.
Jimmy leaves behind his loving wife and best friend of 55 years, Margaret (Clarke) and their children, Dawn Brown (William), Jack, Darlene, Michele Bennett (Charlie) and Karen (Shawn Steele).
Poppy will be missed by his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were his pride and joy.
He was predeceased by his son Earl and Grand daughter Emma Grace.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Francis Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday at 3 p.m. at Holy Family Parish (formerly St. Pius X Church) with Fr. Thomas John officiating. Interment to take place in St. Joseph Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
