Opal Chappell, 98 years of age, of Amherst, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at White Birches Retirement Residence. Born January 6, 1916 in Truemanville, she was a daughter of the late George & Etta (Stiles) Trueman.
Opal worked for many years in housekeeping at the Highland View Hospital in Amherst. Opal and her husband Lawrence were very active in the Amherst Farmers Market. She won several prizes in the Oxford Exhibition for vegetables and flowers. She was a lifelong member of the Brookdale Sewing Circle. She was a member of the Brookdale United church and an adherent of the Trinity United Church, Oxford where she resided 19 years after her husbands passing. Opal was a member of the Amherst & Oxford Senior Citizens Club.
Opal will be sadly missed by her daughters, Barbara Best (Jerry) of Brookdale, N.S, Gail Chappell of Cape Tormentine, NB, formerly of Calgary, AB; grandchildren, Michael Best (Allison) of Oxford, NS, Danny Best (Angela) of Brookdale, NS, Tracey Jennings ( Brian) of Toronto, ON; great grandchildren, Meagan Marchant (Kyle), Blake & Lyndsay Best, Joshua, Kristen & Deon Best, Stephanie, Mathew & Craig Jennings.
Opal was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her parents, George & Etta Trueman; her husband, Lawrence, son, Bruce; sisters, Ruby Trueman, Sarah Atkinson, Leota Bickford; brothers, Carl & Kenneth Trueman.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst, N.S. The family will receive visitors on Sunday, from 2-4 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Furlong-Jones Funeral Home on Monday, June 30, 2014 at 2 p.m. Burial to take place in the Amherst Cemetery.
