Mary Norma MacNeil

Born In: New Waterford

Passed in: New Victoria
Passed on: July 4th, 2014

It is with great sadness and a deep sense of loss that we share the news of the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, "Nanni Norma," at her home in New Victoria on Friday, July 4, 2014.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Jennie and James Baldwin and was raised in the well known "12" neighborhood of town. Over the years she worked at F. W. Woolworth’s in New Waterford, the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board and most importantly in New Victoria, raising and supporting her family.
Norma was a tireless volunteer, as well as a founding member and former long time president of the New Victoria Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Supporting many church and community events and causes over the years was common for Norma. She also spent more than 40 years as a popular vendor at local flea markets, craft shows and local events. Norma enjoyed the odd trip to the casino or bingo, tea at the kitchen table, a short drive "to town," vacations in Florida and visits from her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A private person with a sharp wit, she was always direct and clear in expressing thoughts and opinions. Her quiet generosity and a sense of caring always put others ahead of herself, especially when it came to family. She never wanted to have anyone go out of their way for her, or cause inconvenience. She would also never see someone "go without."
What was most obvious with Norma was the unconditional love for her family. She was extremely proud of her children grandchildren and great-grandchildren and with her late husband Paul, provided advice and support to their son, two daughters and grandchildren to help guide their own journeys in life.
Norma was predeceased by her husband, Paul; parents, Jennie and James; brothers, Tom and Myles; brothers-in law, John McNeil, Mike McNeil; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret (McNeil) and Moe Szwalek and sisters-in law, Alex Baldwin and Iris Baldwin.
She is survived by her son, John J. McNeil (Anne Marie), Linda MacNeil (Ralph), Marilyn McNeil (Greg Boone), all of New Victoria; grandchildren, Chrystal McNeil, John McNeil (Jennifer), Katie MacNeil (Randy), Francis MacNeil and Rowan Boone; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Alexis and Abigail. She also leaves brother, Jim, New Waterford; sisters, Lillian (Joe Fortier), Ottawa, Marilyn (Don Perry), Lingan, Selena (Albert Rose), New Waterford and many nieces and nephews.
Norma chose cremation and a funeral service, under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford, as she moves from this life. The funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mt. Carmel Avenue, New Waterford. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, New Victoria with a reception for Norma’s friends and family to follow at St. Leonard's Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford.
The family would like to thank the many health care providers, including the VON, the Palliative Care team and Canadian Red Cross who showed compassion and kindness during their regular visits. With family by her side, they helped to make sure she was comfortable and supported Norma’s wish to stay at home.
Donations in Norma’s memory, to help others, can be made to the Canadian Red Cross, VON, An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, or a charity of your choice.
Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
