Mary (Cordeau) Crane died peacefully on July 2, 2014, at the CND Health Care Center in Sydney, N.S.
Born in Florence, Cape Breton on July 17, 1918, she was the eldest child of the late Jean Pierre and Emma (Fortune) Cordeau.
Mary received her early education at Notre Dame School in Sydney Mines. She was the organist at Immaculate Conception Parish Church until she married and relocated to Montreal. She worked at the DIL in the Payroll Department during the Second World War and later with Sun Life Insurance Co. Mary and Arthur resided in both Montreal and Chateauguay, Que. until they returned to their roots in Cape Breton in 1991.
Music was a major part of Mary's life. She accompanied her grandfather (Henry Fortune) on the violin and played piano at many functions. She taught music in Montreal and was an organist at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Chateauguay, Que. for many years. Following her return to Cape Breton she volunteered her service as organist at St. Joseph Church, Sydney.
She will be fondly and lovingly remembered by her daughters, Anne (Robert) Semerdjian, Vancouver, B.C., and Brenda (Greg) Bezer, Ajax, Ont. Her grandchildren, Kathy (Greg) Hurst, Whitby, Ont., David, Ajax, Ont., Joanne (Jay Rosen), Vancouver B.C., Greg (Elena) Vancouver, B.C., Robert (Nicole) Vancouver, B.C., and seven great-grandchildren, Gabrielle, Max, Rae-Anna, Maggie, Hendrix, Juliana and Matei. Mary is also survived by her sisters, Teresa (Elmer) Doiron, Dartmouth, N.S., Betty, Sydney Mines, Sr. Geraldine, CND, Sr. Agnes, CND, and Sr. Anna, CND, all of Sydney; brothers,, Joseph, Sydney Mines, Father Leo, Edmonton Alta., and Charles (Katherine) Belleville/Sydney Mines. She is also survived by brother-in-law Bernard Crane, Margaree; sisters-in-law, Jeannette Crane, Margaree, Maria Cordeau, Dartmouth, N.S., Frances Cordeau, Toronto, Isabel Crane MacNeil, Sydney Mines, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband Arthur in 2000, brothers, John, Daniel, Stanley, Francis, sister Detta Haley (Ted) and sister-in-law Vivian.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, July 8 from 7-9 p.m. at Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday July 9 at 1p.m. at Holy Family Parish, Sydney Mines with Fr. Leo Cordeau officiating. Interment to take place in St. Mary Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
The family extends sincere gratitude to Dr. Archibald, the nurses and staff of the CND Health Care Center and to the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame who worked at the Health Center where Mary spent the last seven and one-half years. A very special thank you to Fr. Michael Rankin at the CND Health Center. The care and compassion she received was second to none. We will be forever grateful.
