Kaye Hopkins, 82, of Birch Grove passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2014, at the An Cala Palliative Care unit, CBRH with her loving family by her side.
Born in Birch Grove, Kaye was the daughter of the late James ‘Jimmy’ and Leah ‘Geah’ (Hayes) Edstrom.
Kaye lived her life with grace and great kindness. Every day was busy and productive for Kaye and family was always her focal point. Summers at the bungalow in Mira and Christmas dinners in the Grove were special because she was surrounded by people who loved her. She always greeted everyone with a beautiful smile and a welcoming heart.
In her younger years, Kaye worked at the bookstore in Glace Bay before opening Kaye’s Store in Birch Grove. She later worked in the office at H. Hopkins Ltd., the family business.
She was Cliff’s girl, Lynn and Jo’s “Ma”, and a fabulous “Mimi” to her five grandchildren.
Surviving is her husband of 58 years Clifford; daughters, Lynn Cuzner (Rodger) and Joanne Hopkins and grandchildren, Mitch, Scott, Brad, Connor and Maggi; sisters, Pat MacDonald, Elaine MacKenzie, Bev Betts (Bob) and Judy Wadden (Kenzie). Also surviving are special friends, Linda Campbell, Marion Hopkins, Paula (from England) and her old pal, Luke. She will be dearly missed by her bingo buddies and rug-hooking friends as well as her extended family of nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Jake Andrea is Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay.
Donations can be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society for the An Cala Unit.
