TRENTON – Elizabeth Rachael “Betty” Cameron, 94, of the Glen Haven Manor, formerly of Duke St., Trenton, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Monday, July 14, 2014, in the Manor.
Betty was born at home on Duke Street in Trenton on January 5, 1920, to the late Baxter and Minnie (Reid) MacDougall, and is the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She continued to reside on Duke Street until 2006 when she moved to Parkview Manor Seniors Complex in Trenton. In 2011, due to health problems, Betty moved to Glen Haven Manor. Betty worked at Trenton Industries during World War II. Later she worked in the family grocery business, Al Cameron and Son Red and White, with her husband and son. Retiring in 1976, Al and Betty spent their winters vacationing in Florida where Betty was able to spend time with her sisters Ethel and Rita and their families. Betty was a member of First United Church, Trenton, a former member of the church choir, and a member of the Mary Unit for many years. She was a member of Eastern Star and was a Past Matron. In 1988, Betty became an Honorary Member of Maple Leaf LOBA Lodge #914, Trenton, and in 1991 became an Honorary Member of Right Worshipful Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia. Betty received her 60 year pin in 2011. She was a member of the Steeltown Friendly Group and enjoyed attending the Time Out Program at First United Church, Trenton. She loved getting together with friends for a good game of cards, crocheting, playing the piano, ukulele, and singing.
Betty is survived by her son, Baxter (friend Marie), Pictou; grandchildren: James (Pam) Cameron, Trenton; Susan (Victor) Francoeur, Edmonton; Rick (Cheryl) Cameron, Petawawa, and their mother Anne, Halifax; Tanya Cameron, Halifax, and her mother Arlene, Ontario; great-grandchildren: Lindsay (Chris) Hurley and Charles Cameron, Trenton; Crystal (Andrew) Doiron and Alan (Tonya) Cameron, Petawawa; great-great-grandchildren: Riley, Jayson, Liam, Lincoln and Lily, Petawawa; Fionn, Trenton; several nieces and nephews.
Betty was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Albert “Al” Cameron in 2006; sisters: Rita, Evelyn and Ethel; brothers: Parker, Murray, Bill and Mansefield “Cubby”.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, Trenton. Funeral service 2 p.m. Thursday in First United Church, Trenton, with Mr. Fergie MacKay officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. A reception will follow in the Church Hall.
Family flowers only please. Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Red Cross or a charity of choice.
