Florence Katherine Pendergast

Florence Katherine Pendergast

1925-2014. It is with great sorrow that we announce that the Matriarch of the Pendergast family, Florence Katherine Pendergast (nee Bown), in her 89th year, has passed. Predeceased and now reunited with her parents Thomas and Loretta, ten brothers and sisters, husband Frank, daughter Rosalind (Jardine) and sons Craig and Frankie. Left to mourn her exceptional loss are sons: John (Glenys), Gordon (Linda), Kevin (Roxanne), and daughter: Loretta (Ches); son-in-law: Fred Jardine, and daughters-in-law: Diane and Tena. Florence, also lovingly known as "Nan", leaves fifteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren who all loved her so dearly. Florence began her business entrepreneurship as a confectionary owner from the living room of her home on East No. 1. Then, with her children, she went on to serve mountains of potatoes and fried chicken at Pendergast Take-Out on Town Square. She later began a funeral and ambulance service with her husband Frank in 1968. After Frank's death in 1980, she developed Pendergast Funeral Service with her son Frankie, until his death in 2006, and then oversaw it with her son John, to its current multi-service funeral business. She was a woman of strength, faith and love. Florence, who loved her card games and bingo, was the "Miss Daisy" to her friends, driving them to and from the games in her car. She always had a bigger car than she needed, to ensure room for all the ladies. Florence was very devoted to her faith, and loved to attend the 5pm Saturday evening Mass at St. Michael's Parish. This also allowed her time to prepare her countless Sunday dinners for her extended family. When you entered her home, the radio was always humming her favourite hymns, and her rocking chair was always cozy by the stove. A Special Thank You to the Drs, Nurses and staff at the Bell Island Hospital for their compassion and care that they gave our Mom. She proudly wished to be received at Pendergast Funeral Home, and to be driven with love by her son, John in the Funeral Hearse. She will be resting on Thursday, July 17th ,and Friday, July 18th from 12-9pm and her funeral will take place on Saturday, July 19,2014 at 11:00 am from St. Michael's Parish. Interment to follow at the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Bell Island, NL. Flowers are gratefully accepted or donations may be made on her behalf to St. Michael's Church or the Wabana Boys & Girls Club.
