Carl William Bishop

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Carl William Bishop, 89, of Amherst at Gables Lodge on July 9, 2014 with family by his side. Carl was born on July 9, 1925 in Amherst, son of William and Mona (Carlisle) Bishop.
Carl was a hard working man spending much of his work career self employed in the car, scrap metal and taxi business. He was a kind and gentle man who would always help others in need whether lending a few dollars or driving someone where they needed to go. He was an avid car enthusiast and was always buying, selling and tinkering with cars and trucks. Carl loved animals and was responsible for rescuing many that were being thrown away or abused only to give them a loving home and comfort. He was an avid story teller and was known to throw a few pranks in his day all of which made for great storytelling later in life. He was a loving husband, brother, father and grandfather. Carl was well known and respected over the years as he was honest, down to earth and fair in his business dealings. He loved being around people especially his friends, later in life, at the mall.
Besides his parents, Carl was predeceased by his wife of 57 years Gladys Irene (Stiles), brother Gerald and sisters Doris Melanson and Pauline MacDonald. Carl is survived by his daughter Sharon (Ray) Bristol, grandchildren Madeline and Thomas, step grand children Melissa (Eli) Bristol and Matthew (Bre) Bristol and step great grandchildren Macrina and Emmett. Carl is also lovingly remembered by his special niece Darlene MacPherson, special sister in law Karen Barnes, special neighbor Helen Goodwin, several nieces, nephews, friends and beloved feline companion, Tinka.
Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church Street, Amherst (667-8777). A private graveside service will take place in Mount Whatley at a later date. As Carl was a fearless protector of animal care and rescue any donations made in his name to CARMA Amherst Chapter at the Amherst Veterinary Clinic would be greatly appreciated by the family.
