William Gillespie

GILLESPIE, WILLIAM - William "Bill" Gillespie, of Rothesay New Brunswick, died surrounded by his loving family on July 22, 2014 at Bobby’s Hospice. Born Nov 3, 1923 in London Ontario, he was a son of the late George and Doreen (Perry) Gillespie. He had a long healthy life. He was a proud alumni and contributor to McGill University where he completed his BSc and from there went on to complete two years post graduate studies in Geology at the U of T. Before his retirement in 1988, he was a respected member of the Saint John business community. He was on the board of Directors for the Saint John Construction Association and served as vice-president and later president of the Atlantic Provinces Ready Mix and Concrete Association. He was General Manager of Brunswick Ready Mix Concrete which included discovery and development of the aggregates deposit at Blagdon in Welsford which, are now all part of Lafarge Canada. Bill was a very principled and gentle man who was devoted to his family and took the time to relate with each one. Nothing was too much effort. He had a remarkable curiosity and an outstanding memory for all the things he learned in the many books he read as well as the countless number of interesting people he met on his life’s journey. He enjoyed a wide range of topics, nature, history, current events, crossword puzzles, gardening and travel, especially to Florida in winter. Bill was the loving husband of the late Colette (Erard) Gillespie who passed away in 2008. He was proud father-in-law to the late Dan McIntyre. He is survived by his beloved second love and wonderful companion Sally Ann Wagstaff, by his children Dale Gillespie (Ron Kostuik) of Keswick, ON, Jim Gillespie (Margaret Thomson) of Scarborough, Andrea Doley (Brad) of Quispamsis and Janet Gillespie (Bill Tibbo) of Newmarket, ON, brothers; Ron Gillespie (Mary) of Reed's Spring, MO, and Robert Gillespie (Myrna) of St. Lambert, QC, grandchildren; Anthony, Rob, Cameron, Alexander, Stephen, Bryan, Christopher, Gillian, and Matthew, great-grandchildren; Jaymes, Danielle, and Owyn. He is also remembered by his nieces and nephews. He will be missed by the Wagstaffs who have been his loving extended family in recent years.
Resting at Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis (849-2119) with visiting on Saturday from 2 to 4. A Memorial Service will be held at St. David's United Church on Sunday, July 27, 2014 at 1:00 PM. Interment to take place at Avondale Cemetery, Stratford, ON, at a later date.
