Passed on: July 31st, 2014
Ronald George Rompkey, O.C., C.D., MA, BEd (Memorial), PhD (London), F.R.S.C., F.R.Hist.S. University Research Professor. Emeritus. Passed peacefully away in his 71st year at Tiffany Village on July 31st, 2014, after a difficult battle with motor neuron disease. Leaving to mourn brother Bill (Carolyn), nephew Peter (Lisa) in St. John's and niece Hilary (Joel) in Toronto as well as a grandnephew Max and grandniece Ana in Toronto. He will be sorely missed by his loving partner, Jane Leibel, who cared for him profoundly, and looked after him in a superb manner. English was a lifelong love and vocation for him. After an MA from Memorial he graduated from the University of London (England) with a PhD. He then taught at several universities in western Canada before coming to Memorial as professor. He was an outstanding author with his biography of Sir Wilfred Grenfell and other works on Grenfell Mission alumni. Perhaps his greatest contribution to Newfoundland and Labrador was his various books (originally published in French) on the French presence in Newfoundland. He was, for a time, Honourary French Consul in St. John's and was awarded several French medals including L'Ordre de la Pleiade by the French Parliament. By his own country he was made a Member of the Order of Canada. He will be remembered for his contribution to the arts community in the Province. He was a commissioned officer in the RCN (R) rising to the rank of Commander and Commanding HMCS Cabot in an award-winning year. The family and Jane want to thank profusely the excellent staff at Tiffany Village where he received outstanding care and where he spent his last days. Also a heartfelt thanks to Canon Frank Cluett, who met with him regularly as a friend, relative and counselor right to the end. He was an outstanding teacher, researcher and writer and leaves an exceptional mark on Newfoundland and Labrador life and letters. Cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends may visit the family at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Monday, August 4 from 2 to 4PM and from 7 to 9PM. Funeral Service will take place at the Anglican Cathedral on Tuesday, August 5 at 11AM. Interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Forest Road. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the Dr. Ronald G.
