She graduated from Bridgewater High School and from the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse until her marriage to Frank W. Calder in 1948, and later as a private care nurse.

Betty loved to travel, was an avid gardener, letter- writer, skilled knitter and tireless baker for family and community groups. She loved attending musical events, especially those involving her extended family, and was a savvy fan of the Toronto Blue Jays.
She lived in Nappan and Amherst, N.S. until her husband's retirement from the Nappan Experimental Farm. She was keenly interested in the Canadian Association for Community Living in Amherst, was a volunteer at the Bridge Activity Center and a member of their craft group for many years. She generously supported many charities throughout her life.
In 1976-1978, Betty lived in Hyderabad, India with her husband, where he served as advisor on the Indo-Canadian Dryland Research Project. They travelled the width and breadth of the country, and in 1981 went to Sri Lanka where Frank was involved in the same type of work.
On her husband’s retirement in 1987, Betty moved with him to Springville, Pictou Co., where they built a beautiful retirement home, Calderwood. She was a member of the Springville-Island Women’s Institute, and the Springville Presbyterian Church Ladies Aid. Betty was also a member of Trinity United Church, New Glasgow, where she served on Church Council and was a member of the UCW until her passing. In 2009, she moved to Garden Suites, New Glasgow and in 2014, to The Berkeley, Halifax.
