Wilfred Detcheverry

Born In: Glace Bay
Born: April 1st, 1937

Passed in: Glace Bay
Passed on: August 6th, 2014

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing or our dear brother Wilfred on Aug. 6, 2014, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Wilfred, the son of Louis and Matilda Detcheverry, was born on April 1, 1937 in Glace Bay on Duncan Street.
He was the 4th child born in a family of 15 children. Wilfred operated Detcheverry’s Upholstery Shop, the family business, until the time of his stroke in 2002. For the past four years his home was at Victoria Haven in Glace Bay, being cared for by the wonderful staff.
In his younger years, Wilfred had a passion for hunting and fishing and belonged to the Port Morien Wildlife Association, where he volunteered his time helping to stock rivers with fish and helping with the youth fishing derby. He always loved the water and even as a young man, he would take his small row boat to the Glace Bay wharf. He was often seen with binoculars watching the sail boats and ships at sea.
Wilfred was a gentle man, soft spoken and always willing to help when someone was in need. Though Wilfred never married, he was a father figure to many of his nieces and nephews and could often be seen teaching them something in the shop or fixing something for them. He often made little wooden toy trucks or wheel barrels for them in the shop and was proud when he would see the child playing with them. He always had time for family.
Left to morn his passing, are his two brothers, Clifford (Anna) Glace Bay, Francis (Heather), Moncton, N.B.; his seven sisters, Delphine MacNeil, Lindsay, Ontario, Philomena (Jackie) MacInnis, Glace Bay, Annette White, Newmarket, Ont., Cecile Devision, Georgina Island, Ont., Mary (Eddie) MacLean, Sydney, N.S., Ida (Eddie) Donovan, Glace Bay, Lucy (Shannon) McPherson, Glace Bay .
Besides his parents, Wilfred was predeceased by a dear friend, Linda Grey, as well as four of his loving brothers, Albert, Peter, Louie, and Marcel; three brothers-in-law, Rodney White, Joseph MacNeil and Vincent Devision, as well as one sister, Mary at birth.
The family would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Diaz and the staff of the 3rd floor Glace Bay Hospital and palliative care for the exceptional care given to our brother Wilfred at his time of need.
Visitation for Wilfred will be held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay on Sunday, Aug 10th from 2-4 and 7–9 p.m.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Anne’s Church at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 11th. Reception to follow in the church foyer with interment to take place in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to palliative care, Red Cross or a charity of choice.
