On Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014, at the age of 88, God caller her home. It is with sadness and a deep sense of loss that we announce the passing of our mom, grandma and great-grandma, Jennie Mary Barter at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility, Sydney.
Born in Richmond County, Jennie was the daughter of the late John William and Mary (MacInnis) Shaw.
Jennie began her working life as a telephone operator in Halifax, N.S. and worked in the same field for a number of years, including in St. Peter's, N.S. and Borden, Ont.
Jennie married her husband, the late Cpl. James Barter in 1947, and together they had four children.
Jennie is survived by her four children, her sons, Charles (Kelly) Barter, Mirimichi, N.B., Alexander (Shawna) Barter, Deer Lake, N.L., her daughters, Catherine Barter, Sydney, and Karen (Kevin) Steele, Sydney Forks; her grandchildren, Kara, C.J., Jessica, Kyle, Devin Rae, Kayla, Ian, Caitlin, Troy, Alexander, Daniel and Anna and eight great-grandchildren. Also are surviving are her sister, Jessie (Cliff) Bailey, Kelona, B.C., her brother-in-law, Jerry (Maggie) Barter, Bay d'Espoir, N.L., as well as numerous nephews,nieces and extended Barter and Shaw family.
Besides her husband and parents, Jennie was predeceased by her brothers, Archie, Malcolm, Neil, Sandy, Danny and Johnny Shaw, mother and father-in-law, Charles and Lavina (Fudge) Barter, brothers-in-law, Alexander, Hugh, Ira, and George Barter and sister-in-law, Mary Pink.
The family would like to extend thanks to the staff and residents of Harbourstone Enhanced Care Nursing Home, Irish Cove extension for their friendship and care during Mom's stay there.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney from 2:30-4 and 7-8:30 p.m.
Funeral service will take place 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Ron Coole officiating.
Flowers graciously accepted. Donations in Jennie's memory may be made to the Gideons International in Canada or the charity of one's choice. Interment to follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
