David was born and raised in Saint John, N.B. He graduated from St. Malachy's Memorial High School in Saint John. He began his career in the Canadian Army in Gagetown, followed by a posting in Kingston where he was commissioned as an Officer in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in 1963. He was later posted to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island to train officer cadets and complete his post-secondary degree at St. Dunstan’s University. In 1967, while working for a summer in Sydney, Cape Breton, he met, fell in love with and married Mary Elizabeth (Sampson) Campbell, the one true love of his life. After graduating in 1968, he worked for Richardson Securities of Canada in Charlottetown and then in Saint John. His beloved sons Tom and Colin were both born in Saint John.
The family moved to Ottawa in 1974 and David began a 25 year career with the Civil Service, first with Customs and Excise, then with the Department of Insurance and finally, with the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions.
Post retirement, David spent time researching and writing histories of the family and travelling with Mary. He loved his family and friends and was dearly loved in return. His smile, his warm and welcoming demeanour and his storytelling are now a cherished memory.
David was predeceased by his wife, Mary (2011); father, Walter J (1962) and mother, Agnes L (2012) and survived by his sons, Tom (Lisa) and Colin; his sisters, Carolyn (Doherty) and Sandra J and brother, Michael W. He is also survived by his very dear friends.
Friends are invited to visit at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Ave. (East of Vanier Parkway), Ottawa, Ont. (1-866-990-9530) on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014 at 12 noon in the Hall of Colours until time of service in the Sacred Space at 2 p.m.
