Carol Butler

BUTLER, CAROL MARIE (nee ALLEN) - 1946 - 2014 - After a weekend at home in Glenburnie, Ontario, surrounded by family, Carol quietly passed away early in the morning of September 8, after a two year battle with cancer. Carol is survived by her husband of 47 years, Brian E. Butler, and her children and their families: Gregg and Alison Butler, with Evelyn and Maxine, in Ottawa; Sara Butler and Mark LaBine, and their children, Cade, Genevieve, and Miranda, in New Orleans; and Michael Butler and April Story, and their son, Jackson, of Toronto. Carol was predeceased by her son, Christopher. The youngest of eight children, she was also predeceased by her parents, Wilfred and Grace Allen, and her brothers, Stuart Allen and Royden Allen, and is survived by her brother, Brooks Alden of Vancouver, and her sisters, Dorothy Steeves of Brockville, Mavis Ryder of Fredericton, and Joyce Hunter of Hammond Plains, as well as many nieces and nephews. Born in Fredericton, N.B., on Christmas Day, 1946, Carol attended Albert St. School and Fredericton High School before graduating from N.B. Teacher’s College in 1966. She taught in Gagetown, N.B. before marrying Brian, on July 1st, 1967, and moving to Kitchener, ON, so he could attend graduate school. The Catholic school board had an extensive music program and Carol was an integral part of it until moving to Kingston, ON, with Brian, in 1972. She taught French and music with the Lennox-Addington School Board while making the Dean’s list with a B. A. in religion and completing a Master’s of Education at Queen’s. She then became a vice-principal and finally principal at H. H. Langford P. S. in Napanee, ON. As an administrator she missed the direct contact with students but reveled in mentoring the younger teachers. Carol had huge network of friends, especially among retired teachers, and these friends were a joy and comfort to her after her retirement and all during her illness. Our family is forever indebted to them for helping Carol and us through a difficult time. We also want to thank the staff of the Southeastern Ontario Cancer Centre, especially Barb, Dr. Roger Levesque, and Dr. William McKillop, as well as the staff of the Ottawa Civic Hospital and Dr. John Sinclair. Cancer is a terrible experience but these people offer hope, comfort, and compassion that transcends any job requirement.
A visitation and memorial service will be announced soon. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or to Hospice Kingston in Carol’s memory. www.jamesreidfuneralhome.com
