It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing on Sept. 13, 2014 of our son Michael Andrew Fowlie due to cardiac arrest at the QEII Hospital, Halifax.
Born at Halifax, Michael was the beloved son of David and Pauline (McKinnon) Fowlie of Dartmouth.
Having completed his education at Dartmouth High School, Michael attended St. Francis Xavier University, graduating in 2008 with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree. During his third year at St. FX, he also completed an academic semester at the Helsinki School of Economics, Finland. He furthered his academic career at the Graduate School of Management in Grenoble, France, where he graduated in 2011 with his Master of International Business Degree. He achieved his CMA designation in 2013 through his employer Bell Aliant. Recently, Michael was recognized by Bell Aliant with an “Employee of the Year Award” for his excellent contributions to the finance department.
Nothing was more important to Michael than his love for family and friends. His selfless gifts of loyalty, dependability, compassion and humour are just a few of the qualities that Michael possessed. Michael enjoyed many sports including hockey, soccer, cycling, golf, skiing and volleyball. In soccer, he refereed locally, provincially, at the university level and two National Championships.
An enthusiastic traveller, Michael journeyed the world visiting more than 35 countries. During this time, many friendships were developed. Most recently, he completed a tour of South East Asia and returned to Canada, with his eye on the Yukon for his next adventure.
Besides his parents, Michael is survived by several aunts and uncles, Dr. Frank (Lois) Fowlie, Moncton, N.B.; David (Jeanine) McKinnon, Dartmouth, N.S.; Marlene McKinnon, Halifax, N.S.; Theresa (Dan) MacCormack, Halifax, N.S.; Marie (William) Mann, Milton, Ont. and Ann (Leroy) Hawkins, Sydney Mines, N.S.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Mary (Prendergast) and William McKinnon and step-grandfather, John McNeil, all of Little Bras d’Or, and his paternal grandparents, Margaret and Howard Fowlie of Dartmouth. Michael was also predeceased by his aunt, Joan (Bill) Pace of Halifax.
He leaves behind many cousins.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the QE II Foundation Cardiology Division, “Sudden Cardiac Death Research”.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18th in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19th at the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 216 School St., Dartmouth. Reception to follow at the Brightwood Golf and Country Club.
