Muriel GEORGE

NEW GLASGOW – Muriel Edith (Beale) George, age 92, died in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, on September 24, 2014.
She was born on October 26, 1921 in Whitchurch, Hampshire, England, a daughter of the late Arthur and Helena (Ryan) Beale.
Surviving family are her children: Michael (Helen), Poplar Hill; Paul (Kathleen), Chance Harbour; Monica George Punké (Gerald), New Glasgow; and grandchildren: Michelle (Glenn) Livingston, Kathleen (Paul) MacDonald, Donald (Terry) George, Shannon George (Blair) Yerxa, Carolyn George, Hilary (Andrew) Raynard, Amy Punké, Shannon Estabrooks (Marc) Theriault, Susan (Jason) Sauvé; 15 great-grandchildren; family friend, Sheila Conway.
She will be sorely missed by her loyal little cat, Marigold.
Muriel was the last of her immediate family.
She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, William “Bill” George; siblings, Thomas and Kathleen; grandsons, Christopher and Peter George.
During WWII, Muriel was a member of the fire brigade, serving as a fire warden in her home village, Whitchurch. It was during a dance there, that she met Bill. Muriel was a war bride, who arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax, on March 6, 1946. They built a life for themselves in New Glasgow, raising their family, and enjoying many happy years of camping, picnicking and travelling. Muriel was a dedicated crafts person, who excelled in knitting, sewing, and hand craft work of all sorts. She loved knitting socks and mittens for all the children in her family. She was also actively involved in her community and gave generously of her time and talents to many organizations, including: St. George's Anglican Church, Aberdeen Hospital Auxilliary, IODE and Trinitarians Choir. Generations of young people have benefited from her leadership and mentoring in the Scouting and Guiding movement and Pictou District Honour Choir (thank you for all those gingerbread choristers, Nannie George!).
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 2-4 p.m. Saturday in St. George’s Anglican Church Hall, New Glasgow. Funeral service will take place 2:30 p.m. Sunday from St. George’s Anglican Church, with Rev. Lidvald Haugen-Strand officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall.
Family flowers only please. Donations in her memory may be made to the St. George’s Anglican Church or the S.P.C.A.
