NEW GLASGOW – Hugh MacDonald, age 93, of the Northumberland Veterans Unit, formerly of New Glasgow, passed away Wednesday, October 8, 2014 in the Aberdeen Hospital.
Born in Trenton, he was a son of the late Norman and Jessie (MacDermid) MacDonald.
He was retired from the NS Liquor Commission. He served overseas during the Second World War from June 1942 - February 1946 in Italy. He was a member of the First United Church, Trenton; Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29 and he belonged to the Masonic Lodge, in Toronto. In 1935-36 he started playing hockey with the Trenton Juniors and then the British Consuls Junior Team in 1936-39. In 1939-40 at the age of 18, he played senior hockey with the Pictou Regals. Following the War, in 1946-47 he played with the Moncton Hawks and after winning the Maritime Senior Hockey Championship played two games at Maple Leaf Gardens in Allan Cup play. In 1951-52 he coached the Trenton Scotians to the Maritime Junior B Championship. He retired from playing hockey in 1954-55. He enjoyed horse racing and raised two racing horses, Chief and Sweet Tawny Mac.
He is survived by his wife, Helen (Skidmore); daughter, Stacie (Allan) Cullen, Foxbrook; grandchildren, Amber (Shane) Watters; Ashley Ward; great-grandchildren: Jamie, Jayden, Zackery and Landon; sister Norma Mason, Trenton; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Bonnie Hood; brothers: John, Angus “Sonny”, Robert and Danny; sisters: Vickie, Christie and Maggie.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request. Funeral service 1 p.m. Friday in the First United Church, Trenton, with Rev. Wade Reppert officiating. Burial will be in Abercrombie Cemetery at a later date.
Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
