CRAWLEY, ERNEST FREDERICK – The passing of Ernest Frederick Crawley of Legion Court, Quispamsis, NB, husband of the late Alison M. (Ingalls) Crawley, occurred on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on July 25, 1922 in Montreal, Quebec, he was the son of the late George F. and Ivy (Mills) Crawley. Ernie was employed from 1941 until 1976 as a Mechanic with Trans Canada Airlines/Air Canada. From 1941 to 1945, Ernie was loaned out to the Royal Air Force Ferry Command Return Ferry Service where he was the Crew Chief in charge of the maintenance crew responsible for converting and outfitting Liberator Bomber aircraft for the Ferry Command who transported the fighter pilots who had flown the bombers overseas back to Canada. At the end of the war, he returned to Trans Canada Airlines and worked with both the Trans Atlantic and domestic services. In 1949, Trans Canada Airlines requested that he transfer to the airfield at Pennfield, NB to take charge of aircraft maintenance. He then came to the new Saint John Airport in January of 1952, where he served as Mechanic in Charge for Air Canada until his retirement in November of 1976. Upon his retirement, he and his wife, Alison wintered in Dade City, Florida, returning in 1980 to live in Barnesville, NB and care for his parents until their passing. In 1987, they sold the house in Barnesville and moved to Legion Court in Quispamsis, returning to Dade City for the winter months, until Alison’s passing there in January of 1992. Ernie is survived by his sons, George Crawley (Lorraine) of Baxter’s Corner, Robert Crawley (Margaret), Fred Crawley (Candace), his daughter, Linda Crawley, all of Saint John, 11 Grandchildren, 14 Great-Grandchildren, his sister-in-law, Leslie Gilmore, two nephews and many dear friends. Besides his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his sister, the late Eileen (Crawley) Lortie.
Arrangements are under the care of Fundy Funeral Home. Visitation and a reception will take place at All Saints Anglican Church, 218 Route 820, Upper Loch Lomond, NB on Tuesday evening, October 21, 2014 from 7 to 9. A private family burial will take place at Ocean View Memorial Gardens at a later date.
