FERNS, (Kate) Katherine Mclean, (RN Ret’d) 79 passed away October 17, 2014 in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, NS. Surrounded by her daughter Joanne, family members. and the Revered Mary J White. Born July23, 1935 in Enfield, NS she was the daughter of the late Willard and Alice (Johnson) Whidden. Kate graduated from the Nova Scotia Hospital Training School for Nurses and worked as an RN at the Nova Scotia Hospital in Dartmouth. Kate spent many happy hours caring and tending to the flower gardens at the Greenfield United Church, volunteering at the Colchester East Hants Heath Centre, where she enjoyed listening to their stories, reading and chatting to the patients. Kate cherished quality time family and friends and could always be found helping out on clean up. She was a member of the Greenfield Untied Church, Heritage Rug Hookers and the Retired Registered Nurses Association. Survived by her daughter Joanne Ferns, (Jim Gifford) St Catherines, Ont. Grandchildren, Aimee Ferns ( Tylor Sampson), St. Charines, Brie Ferns, St.Cathrines, and Devon Ferns , Britsh Columbia. Kate became a great grandmother on October 11,2014 to London Michael Sampson. She was predeceased by her son Tommy in 2000. As a lasting Gift to Medical Science and Teaching Kate has donated her body to Dalhousie Medicine. At Kates request there will be no funeral service or viewing. A celebration of Kates life will be held at her home on October 23, 2014 at 837 College Road, Truro Apartment 4 from 3 p.m to 6 p.m. Donations in Kates memory may be made to Kane’s Kitchen or Greenfield Church.
