With broken hearts, we regret to announce the passing of our father, Lawrence (Lonnie) Roy Saunders, 63, on Thursday, October 23rd, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born on Nov. 13, 1950 in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Herbert Saunders and Delores (MacDonald) (Saunders) Gerrow.
Dad is survived by his children, Kerri (Paul) MacCormack, Sydney, their children Ava, Bryce, and Ella; Chris Saunders (Tierney McIsaac), Sydney, and their children Alexandra and Zoe; Yvette (Brad) Serroul-MacKinnon and her children Jessica and A.J.; sisters, Eileen Burns, North Sydney and Theresa (Jim) White, Dartmouth. A niece, four nephews, cousins, many dear friends and his former wife, Shelley Barry.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by stepfather, Ted Gerrow.
Dad was a proud member of Local 92 and most recently worked for MML, Albian Sands, where he formed many friendships. After spending over 10 years in Fort McMurray, he retired in 2012 and returned home to Cape Breton. In his earlier years he worked on the lake boats, bartending, as carpenter and was a member of Labourers Union Local #1115.
Dad enjoyed camping, fishing, hockey and spending time with friends and family - especially his grandchildren of whom he was very proud.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation for Lonnie will be held 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26th, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A prayer service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday in the Funeral Home, followed by a reception at the Northern Yacht Club, Seaview Drive, North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, the family would request in Lonnie’s memory, that people consider donating blood to the Canadian Blood Services and/or becoming an organ donor.
