Francis Cobham

COBHAM, FRANCIS - After a long and wonderful life, Francis Ida Cobham, RN (The Queen), age 98, gently left us on November 5, 2014 to join her husband of 58 years, Frederick S. P. Cobham. She will be sadly missed by her three Princesses Margaret Cobham-Mollins (Eric), Donalda Bradley (Dan), Valerie Cobham-Richards (Bruce); Grandchildren Shawn (Brenda), Shane, Ryan (Tracy), Kimberley, David and Catherine; Great-Grandchildren Spencer, Samuel, Julia, Brooke and Cole; as well as many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister-in-laws Greta Cobham, Helen Cobham and Shirley Cobham. Mother, had a great sense of wit and always kept us laughing – the stories we could tell! Mom enjoyed being called by so many names; Congdon, Nurse, Frances, Fran, Mom, Mother, Nannie, Great Nannie, Great Nannie “C” and her favourite – “The Queen”. When called “The Queen” she would bow her head to you and give you the royal wave! In 1934, Mother left “The Farm” in Great Village, NS to join the Saint John General Hospital School of Nursing from which she graduated in 1937. A true nursing professional, she retired at the early age of 75. After this, she carried on volunteering at the Canadian Red Cross and the Church of St. John St. Stephen Nursing Home. Mother loved raising her three Princesses and as the family expanded, spending time with them all. She was an avid bridge player and could never understand why her Princesses never kept score when they played bridge. Mother spent many a day curling at Thistle St. Andrews Curling Club and swimming in the Saint John River or at the Saint John Aquatic Centre – her last swim being when she was 89 in the Saint John River. She loved to travel enjoying many trips to Europe, the Caribbean and throughout Canada and the US. Mother enjoyed spending her summers with Fred, family and friends, camping in the US and Canada and then permanently at Pirate’s Cove on the beautiful Belleisle Bay. In Mother and Father’s early years, they enjoyed boating on the Saint John River and continued boating with her Princesses and their families in later years. Mother was a life member of Thistle St. Andrews Curling Club and The Saint John General Hospital School of Nursing Alumni. Mother was a member of the Portland United Church where she served on the Board of Stewards, Session and a member of the Ada Miles (UCW) group.
If you would like, please join Mother’s family at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) for a visit on Saturday, November 8th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. A Celebration of Mother’s life will be held from Portland United Church on Sunday November 9th at 3:15 followed by a reception at the church. For those who wish, remembrances to the Church of St. John St. Stephen Nursing Home Fund or Bobby’s Hospice would be appreciated by Mother’s Family. Our family would like to take this time to thank everyone at the Church of St. John St. Stephen Nursing home for their love and care of Mom over the last four years.
