Owen C. Sharkey

At the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, well cared for by the staff of Unit 3, Owen died on November 7, 2014, shortly after his 92nd birthday.
Owen was born on October 28, 1922, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the eldest child of Owen F. and Caroline "Carrie" (Sinnott) Sharkey. He lived in Saskatchewan until he was six years old, when his father died. His family then moved back to Prince Edward Island, where he went to school in Morell until entering St. Dunstan's College. While attending St. Dunstan's, he had the highest aggregate academic score in the college for four years. After graduation, he entered St. Augustine's Seminary in Toronto and was ordained a priest in 1948. After ordination, he was a family counselor in Halifax for several years and furthered his education before taking the position of Professor of Psychology at St. Dunstan's University, later UPEI, serving as the Head of the Psychology Department for several years before devoting his full time to teaching and research. Owen loved teaching and interacting with the students. His courses were among the most popular at the university and many students became lifelong friends, sharing their lives and those of their succeeding generations with him.
Owen had many nieces and nephews with whom he often spent summer and Christmas holidays, and, after retirement, he enjoyed going to Florida with his sister in the winter months, where he had numerous friends.
Owen was happy at Geneva Villa for the last four years, and will be missed by the staff there and by his former neighbours on Kenlea Dr. He was a kind, gentle and generous man.
Owen is survived by his sister Ida May (Frank, predeceased) Jay and his four nephews and five nieces. He was predeceased by his brother, Billy, two nieces and one nephew.
At his request, there will be no visitation or funeral service.
