It is with saddened hearts, we announce the passing of a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Shirley passed away peacefully, with her loving son at her side, Nov. 7, 2014 at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, June 24, 1930, Shirley was the daughter of the late Phillip and Mildred (Curtis) Whalen and was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. She was predeceased by the love of her life, the late Leonard MacLean, in 1980.
Shirley was a PCW and ward clerk, working at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay General Hospital and retiring from Seaview Manor. She was a very kind and generous person who gave freely of herself and expected very little in return.
She was very involved in the CWL at St. Anne’s Church. Her faith was very important to her and carried her through many difficult times, especially after the death of her husband.
She spent many wonderful years living on Hillside Avenue with her husband, Leonard and son, Les. She was blessed to have many wonderful friends and neighbours and enjoyed living the past 10 years on Myrman Drive.
Shirley will be sadly missed by her loving son, Les, his wife Anne Marie and her grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Jesse and Taylor, whom she adored. She is also survived by her siblings, Joseph (Sis) Whalen, Norma (Al) Cox; several nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides her parents and husband Leonard, she was also predeceased by brothers, Ernest, Emmanuel, Gordon; sisters, Mary, Ann, Marina, Audrey and Muriel.
Family flowers only, please. Donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Diabetes Association.
There will be no visitation; cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Leo Boone, will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014, in St Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. A reception in the church foyer will immediately follow the mass. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.
