Leila Mirjam Clase (nee Hytti)

Passed on: November 8th, 2014

March 6, 1935 - November 8, 2014. Dear wife of Howard for 51 years, mother of Andrew and Michael, mother-in-law of Helen and Catherine, grand-mother of William, Phoebe, Imogen and Jonathan. Leila will also be missed by Howard's sister Margaret, her husband David and their children Zoë and Dominic and his partner Imogen; by her cousin Teija and her family; by her lifelong friend Liisa; and by her many friends including those who knew her through the Friends of the Garden, the Wildflower Society of NL, WAMUN and the NDP. She was a linguist who taught English in Finland, Russian and linguistics in Newfoundland, and studied Labrador Inuktitut grammar for her M.A. thesis. She also became an enthusiastic botanist and shared her encyclopaedic knowledge of Newfoundland plants with many on wildflower walks all around the province. Her love of plants and nature, her skills as a gardener, her patience and hard work contributed to the beauty of the botanical gardens at Oxen Pond, and with Howard, she created a small paradise around the home they shared for 35 years. Her excellence in the kitchen, especially baking, was well known and appreciated by family and friends. She was always looking for new recipes to try, and passed on some of her skills and enthusiasm for cooking to her husband and sons. Leila was most ably and compassionately cared for in her last illness by Dr Debra Bergstrom and the rest of the haematology team at the Health Sciences Centre, and in her last days by Dr Cheryl Hurley and the other caring and skilled staff at the palliative care centre. She and Howard also particularly want to thank Barbara and the other nurses and staff who made the ATU feel more like a place to visit than a treatment centre. In lieu of flowers, donations to be made in her memory to the MUN Botanical Garden or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF.ca) would be appreciated. A Memorial Service will be held at St James United Church, 330 Elizabeth Ave. at 11.30 a.m. on Friday November 14 with a reception afterwards.
