It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Nelson Joseph Morris, 64, of Eskasoni, on Nov. 17, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with his loving family by his side.
Nelson was born on Jan. 28, 1950, son of the late Leo Morris and Guida Mae (Toney) Gallagher.
He is survived by his son Brendan Peck; brothers, Philip (Sandra), Wayne, Roger (Anna), Anthony (Barbara); sisters, Priscilla (Jetta) Denny, Terry Lynn Marshall (David), Annmarie Gallagher, and Elizabeth Bernard, Whycocomagh.
It is with deepest gratitude that Nelson was raised and survived by his second mom Annie Claire Googoo; siblings, Pat Powers, Isabel Flyinghawk, Noel Googoo (Mary), Linda Walzer, Carolyn MacSween (Lloyd), John D. Googoo (Brenda), Joanie Paul (John G.), Mary V. Paul, and Wanda Isaac. Nelson is also survived by his godchildren, Stuart, Brennan, Nyles, Bria, and Oliver, Joshua and by many nieces and nephews.
Nelson was predeceased by his second dad John D. Googoo, stepfather James K. Gallagher, brothers, Christopher Gallagher and Tommy Paul, brothers- in-law,
Frank Powers and Bruno Walzer.
Nelson was proud of his military career as he was a member of the United States Army, artillery division. He served as a peacekeeper in Korea during the Vietnam era. Up to the time of his illness, he was employed as a truck driver with Morris Trucking in Eskasoni. Nelson was also a survivor of the Shubenacadie Indian Residential School. Nelson also served a two-year term as a band councillor for the Eskasoni First Nation. One of Nelson’s hobbies was travelling extensively throughout the United States, and especially Arizona to visit his baby sister, Annmarie.
Visitation for Nelson Morris will begin on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, at 7 p.m. at the Holy Family Parish Gabriel Centre. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014. Fr. Martin MacDougall will officiate. Interment will be in the parish cemetery and Salite to follow at the Gabriel Centre.
