With broken hearts we, the family, announce the passing of Mary Catherine Locke, of Bateston, who passed away Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Bateston, she was the daughter of the late John and Marcella (MacDougall) Bates.
Over the years, Mary worked at Crowells, the Fortress of Louisbourg and Anchors Aweigh. She was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church, Main-A-Dieu, as well as a founding member of the CWL and was involved with them for over 50 years.
Mary is survived by her loving husband, Charles Douglas; daughters, Madonna Locke, Grand Prairie, Alta., Glenda (Hughie) MacLeod, Sydney, Juanita (Phil) MacKenzie, Lower Sackville and Marcella (Gary) Gerard, Waverley; sons, Terry (Kathleen), Ontario and James (Catherine), Lower Sackville; sister, Margaret Bennett, Boston, Mass.; brothers, Patrick (Patricia) Bates and James (Sheila) Bates, both of Sydney; grandchildren, Christopher (Lisa), Tanya (Steven), Joey (Michelle), Angela (Brandon), Aaron (Kelsey), Quentin (Kelly), Charlie, Jordyn, Jeffery and Laurie; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was predeceased by her sister, Marcella (Kenny) MacDonald.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m.-12 noon in Immaculate Conception Church, Main-A-Dieu. Funeral mass will take place in the church on Friday, Nov. 28, 2014, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Rajaskar Savarimutha officiating. Interment in Immaculate Conception Cemetery.
Memorials in Mary’s memory may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery Fund or the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
