Maynard Blanchard Simpson

SIMPSON, Maynard Blanchard – 68, Economy, passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, on Sunday, December 21, 2014, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. He was a son of the late Blanchard and Ena (Taylor) Simpson. Maynard was a lifelong resident of the community that meant so much to him. He farmed and logged all his life while driving truck and snow plow for a number of years. Every year he donated his field down Jacob’s Lane for the Clam Festival until it was no longer held. Shortly after Maynard’s cancer diagnosis in 2013, he and Susan learned that they would be ineligible for support that would assist them in traveling back and forth for cancer treatment in Halifax. Determined to “right a wrong”, Maynard and Susan embarked on a year and a half long campaign to lobby the Government to change its eligibility guidelines for the program. After appearances on television, newspapers and in the legislature, Maynard became the face of this important advocacy work. He was passionate about supporting others living with cancer. In 2014, the Government changed its eligibility criteria for the program, citing Maynard’s advocacy efforts as a catalyst for the change. Maynard is survived by his very proud wife, Susan (Taylor) Simpson; daughter, Kimberly, Halifax; sister-in-law, Heather Simpson, Cranbrook, British Columbia; nephew, James Simpson, British Columbia; many cousins. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Nobel Simpson. Many thanks to the Palliative Care team and the nurses on the D Wing at Colchester East Hants Health Centre; they are all angles among us. Also, thanks to Dr. Murray and all the staff involved in Maynard’s wonderful care; their kindness was a great support to our family and words can never express how grateful I am. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall-Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where the funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m., Saturday, December 27, 2014, Reverend Florence Antle-Brison officiating. Interment in Economy Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to We Care About Cancer Fund or a charity of choice. Private message of condolence may be sent to the family by viewing Maynard’s obituary on-line and selecting "Send A Condolence" at: www.mattatallvarnerfh.com
