SCOTT, ROBERT "BOB" NELSON - Born in Saint John, NB, in 1933, Bob is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan (Smallwood); by his five children, Marilyn, Brian (Laurie), Lois (Dale), David (Susan), and Cathy (Tom); by nine grandchildren, Bradley, Eric, Abbie (Dalen), Judson (Fallon), Ashlee, Sara, Matthew, Jessie and Mharie; and by three great-grandchildren, Cohen, Brody and Asher. Bob was a 1950 graduate of Saint John High School and held a BSc in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick as well as a DSc from Acadia University. He taught Electrical Engineering at UNB from 1956 until his retirement in 1990, founded the UNB Institute of Biomedical Engineering which was named RN Scott Hall in 2002 in his honour. He led a team of researchers that achieved world leadership in development of electronic control systems for artificial limbs. Author of more than 150 publications, Bob was active in academic affairs, serving two terms as a member of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada as well as a number of national and international organizations. His work with amputees led to international appointments including service on the USA National Research Council Committee on Prosthetics Research and Development. He was active in professional affairs, notably in helping to develop the Profession of Clincial Engineering in Canada. For several years he served on the Board of Directors of the Stan Cassidy Rehabilitation Centre in Fredericton. Bob was honoured by his university, and by national and international organizations. Most recently he received the prestigious CC Kirby Award from the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick, for outstanding service to the province and to his profession. Bob was for many years an active member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Fredericton, and more recently of St. James Presbyterian Church in Hanwell, NB, where he served as an organist and elder. He served one term as a Moderator of the Presbytery of Saint John, Presbyterian Church in Canada. Bob's hobbies included music, camping, photography, carpentry and boat-building. For several years he served as Assistant Director of the Oromocto youth choir Lintuhtine and as a member of the Fredericton Music Festival Committee. His last boat-building project was a 31 ft. solar-powered river cruiser which he built with his son, David.
Visitation will be held at McAdam's Funeral Home, 160 York St., on Sunday, December 28th, 2014 from 2 to 5 pm. The funeral will be held at St. James Presbyterian Church in Hanwell on Monday, December 29th, at 2:00 pm with Rev. Wendy MacWilliams officiating. In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to make a donation to the University of New Brunswick Institute of Biomedical Engineering (www.unb.ca/donations/ or 453-5053) or to a charity of the donor's choice.
