Sister Viola died peacefully at Toronto East General Hospital on Monday
December 29, 2014 in the 75th year of religious life with the Sisters of Service.
Born in Bothwell, PEI, she was the youngest of the seven children born to James Francis Mossey and Sarah MacCormack. Predeceased by her parents, brothers, Basil, Freeman, Bernard, and sisters, Kaye Grindle, Cecilia Stewart and Sister Marguerite, CND. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. Entering the Sisters of Service on August 2, 1939, Sister Viola's ministry took her across Canada with appointments to missions from Vancouver to St. John's. Her "Island" hospitality,
graciousness and warm smile provided comfort in the Sisters of Service
residences for young women in Vancouver, Edmonton, Halifax and St. John's, where she served for almost two decades. She undertook special assignments as Co-ordinator of Religious Instruction for the Deaf in Edmonton and Superior of the Religious Correspondence School in Clarenville, NL as well as pastoral care at St. Ann's in Penticton, BC, Holy Rosary Cathedral in Regina, and at Tabor Retreat House in Charlottetown. At the Motherhouse in Toronto, she served as Assistant
Treasurer and Secretary to the Superior General. Later, Sister Viola contributed her organization skills to the Sisters of Service Archives upon retirement in
Toronto at the Scarborough Retirement Centre, and at LaSalle Manor Retirement Centre. Before moving to Providence Healthcare earlier this year, Sister Viola celebrated her 100th birthday and 75 years of Religious Life joined by her Community, relatives and friends. Among her many gifts of service, she will be remembered especially for her gentle love, the centre of family communication and keeper of family stories, a quick wit, a caring and prayerful presence and enduring faith, sharing generously wherever she lived and ministered. The Sisters of Service
extend their sympathy to her relatives and many friends. May she rest in peace. Relatives and friends may call at the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto Residence, 2 O'Connor Drive, Toronto on Sunday, January 4th from 3:30 p.m. with a Prayer Vigil at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place Monday January 5, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. presided by Rev. Philip Shano, S.J., in the chapel at 2 O'Connor Drive. Interment Mt. Hope Catholic Cemetery, Toronto. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home & Chapel,Toronto.
