Paul McNeill

McNEILL, Paul Gerald – 91, of Pictou, passed away on January 2, 2015 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born May 25, 1923 in Pictou, he was a son of late James and Mary (MacDougall) McNeill, Pictou N.S. As a teenager, Paul worked as a cab driver in the early 1940’s, ferrying people back and forth between the New Glasgow/Stellarton area and the shipyards in Pictou. While driving a group of young ladies from their boarding house in Stellarton to their work at the shipyards, he caught the eye of a young beauty from Inverness called Faye MacDonald and they were married on February 3, 1944, which was a stormy winter day. He joined the CNR as a telegrapher in Pictou and worked for 44 years in various postings in Sydney Mines, Iona, Inverness, Pictou, Truro, New Glasgow and Stellarton, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Stella Maris Church in Pictou and was very proud of his 4th Degree Knighthood in the Knights of Columbus (June 1991). In his younger days, he played defence on various hockey teams in Pictou and liked to play golf and salmon fish in the Margaree River. He was an avid researcher in family genealogy and loved to travel and visit family and friends in Florida, Montreal, Vancouver, Oregon, California, Boston and Scotland. Paul is survived by his wife Mary Florence “Faye" (MacDonald) Pictou; son Norman Paul (Dianne) Dartmouth; daughter Winnifred ‘Winnie’ Chisholm, Pictou; grandchildren, Matthew, Paul, Sarah, Jay, Katherine, Christine and great grandchildren, Sonny, Brady, Owen, Isaac, Alexis, Ryan and Logan. Paul is also survived by brothers Stan, Pictou; Walter, Oregon; sister Laurel Decourcey, Montreal. Paul was predeceased by daughter Geraldine (Doody) Rankin, Boston; brothers Jack, Bert, Allister (Peller), James; sisters, Rita Walker and Florence McNeill. Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 7-9 PM Monday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday from Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, Pictou, with Father Tom MacNeil officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Family flowers only. Donations in his memory may be made to Dartmouth Adult Services Center (www.dasc-ns.ca) or to the Stella Maris Roman Catholic Cemetery Fund. The family would like to thank Dr. Farrell and the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital for their care and comfort.
