Passed in: Sydney
Passed on: January 5th, 2015

With broken hearts we announce that Pearl Marguerite Stevens, 87, of Sydney, passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at the Cove Guest Home, with her family at her side.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Murvale and Emily (Oram) Vail.
Pearl is survived by her daughters, Lynn (Peter) Gouthro, Blackett’s Lake, Gail Stevens, Dartmouth, Joanne (Ron) Kalbhenn, Coxheath; son, Sandy (Rita), Bedford, Robert, Saint John, N.B. She took great joy in her 10 grandchildren Deidre Gouthro-Gilborn, Andrew Gouthro, Steven Gouthro, Mark Gouthro, Laura White, Jonathan Stevens, Troy Stevens, Tracy Stevens, Shawn Kalbhenn, Jeffrey Kalbhenn and seven great-granddaughters.
Pearl was the last surviving member of her immediate family, predeceased by the love of her life, husband, Alex, sisters, Ada (Harper) MacNeill and Ruby (Al) MacKinnon, sister-in-law, Eva Stevens.
Though family was everything to Pearl, she did manage a career as well, graduating as an RN from the Glace Bay General Hospital in 1948. She limited her work during her children’s younger years, but was still called upon by many a neighbor on Waterview Drive to deal with the odd cut and alleviate fears. She spent most of her career at the Cove, earning a reputation as someone who did not give or allow anyone to get poor care or even a poorly made bed, retiring in 1990. Pearl was a member of the United Protestant Church of Sydney River. Pearl loved to bake and knit, there was always a cookie in the cookie jar.
Visitation will take place Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at Sydney Memorial Chapel from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at United Protestant Church of Sydney River, with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Interment in Alfred Smith Cemetery, at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the United Protestant Church of Sydney River, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, or charity of choice.
The family wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Cove Guest Home for the excellent care she received while she resided there.
Words of comfort may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or email sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
