Margaret Bateman

BATEMAN, MARGARET S. - 1919-2015 - Surrounded by family, in her 96th year, the death of Margaret Stewart (Burns) Bateman, occurred peacefully in her home, at Shediac Cape, N.B. on Thursday, January 8,2015. Born in Renfrew, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late John Knox Burns and Elizabeth Johnston (Dickson) Burns. Widow of the late Chesley Raymond Bateman, she is survived by one brother, John Burns in Edinburgh, Scotland, and four children; Lois Bateman of Little Rapids, Nfld, Linda Bateman (the late Alex Reitsma) of Seabright, NS, Lorraine Bateman (Marc Lulham) of Fredericton, NB, and Arthur Bateman (Nancy Wheaton) of St. Edouard, NB. Also survived by eight grand children; Linda’s children; Jonathan LeBoutillier (Karen), Amy Reitsma (Nye Pascoe), Casey Reitsma (Dave Salvaire), and Maggie Reitsma; Lorraine’s children, James Cook (Brittany Seay),and Clifford Cook; Arthur’s children, Tiffany Bateman (John Terris) and Jordan Bateman (Rosie Roberts). She is also survived by four great grandchildren; Jordyn, Katie and Kyler LeBoutillier; and Knox Terris, as well as many nieces and nephews and cherished friends. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by five siblings; May, Nana, Jean, Robert and Betty, and by Chesley’s brothers and their wives; Harold (Mabel) and Clarence (Mary). Since coming to Canada to marry Chesley, whom she met while she was in the Home Guard and he was serving overseas during World War II, she quickly became an active and treasured member of her community. As a member of St Martin’s in the Woods Anglican Church, she participated in the Anglican Church Women (ACW), the Guild, the quilting group, the choir and served as the vestry clerk and a Sunday school teacher. She was also Past Grand Matron, Past Grand Officer and Past Grand Representative to Scotland of the Zetland Chapter No. 26, Order of the Eastern Star, and spent many years volunteering with Meals on Wheels and the Shediac Cape Consolidated School breakfast program.
Funeral service will be taking place at St Martins in the Woods Anglican church on Thursday, January 15th at 2pm with reception to follow next door in the Young Smith Hall. Interment to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the ACW, St Martins in the Woods Anglican Church, 3394 Rte 134, Shediac Cape, NB E4P 3J2.
