Anton “Tony” Starchuk
October 2, 1928 – January 14, 2015
Anton “Tony” Starchuk, late of Prince Albert, SK, passed away on January 14, 2015 in Prince Albert, SK at the age of 86 years. Tony was born on October 2, 1928 in Strong Pine, SK. He began his working life by helping his father on the farm at a very young age. As a young man he moved to Ontario to work as a logger in the bush. He eventually made his way back home and in 1952 he married Edith Prokopie. It was in Strong Pine that they bought a farm, where he farmed and worked as a Fire Tower Watchman. They began their family with two daughters, Gail and Carol. He studied and became a journeyman Carpenter and started building houses in the Prince Albert and Shellbrook area. In the summer of 1966, he completed his first home in Prince Albert and two weeks later, their daughter Joanne was born. He continued to work in construction at Beaver Lumber and owned his own construction company T&M Construction. He also worked in construction up north building the Rabbit Lake Mine and at Wollaston Lake. After 15 years at Weyerhaeuser Pulp Mill, he retired at 65 and continued farming in Strong Pine and carried on with his passion of carpentry and would build anything that needed to be built for Big Brothers and Sisters, the Ukrainian Club and anybody else that needed his exemplary carpentry skills. He was also very actively involved with Big Brothers and Sisters and the Men's Ukrainian Club. In addition to building things for his daughters, fishing, ice fishing, hobby farming and camping were some of his favourite pastimes. Since the beginning of 2011, he lived in Nelson Care Home in Prince Albert, SK, Jubilee Lodge in Kinistino, SK and Pineview Terrace in Prince Albert, SK. At each home, he received excellent care and attention from the staff as well as teasing and laughing with him and making him feel at home. He also made some very special friendships with other residents who provided companionship. Tony will be remembered by his daughters: Gail Fisher, Carol Kabaroff, and Joanne Starchuk; his grandchildren: Carri Fisher (Richard St. Pierre), Terran (Penny) Fisher, and Darcy Kabaroff; his great-grandchildren: Cody and Cassidy Kabaroff, and Presley Fisher; his siblings: Mary Hryhorchuk, Rose Slonski, Sophie Rutkowski, and William (Audrey) Starchuk; his in-laws: Pauline Tkachuk, Mike (Iris) Prokopie, Walter (Doris) Prokopie, Marie Slonski, and Orest (Judy) Prokopie; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. Tony was predeceased by his wife of 61 years: Edith (October 2013); his sons-in-law, who referred to him as “Chief”: Harvey Kabaroff (December 1979) and Peter Fisher (June 2006); his parents: Mike and Verna Starchuk; his brother: Steve (Anne) Starchuk; his parents-in-law: Frank and Mary Prokopie; his in-laws: Pete Hryhorchuk, Joe Slonski, Mike Rutkowski, John Tkachuk, Frank Slonski, Billy and Olga Balon; and his niece and nephew: Diane Delooze and Clarence Slonski.
