Born In: St. Alban's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

Passed in: Norh Sydney
Passed on: January 15th, 2015

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our mother and grandmother Lucy (Collier) Long, who passed away peacefully in the arms of the Lord, Thursday, January 15, 2015, surrounded by family members at the Taigh Solas Nursing Home, Northside General Hospital.
Lucy was born in St Albans, Newfoundland in 1919. She was the daughter of the late Abraham and Ida Mary Collier. Lucy met her husband Lawrence in St Albans, where she lived and raised 12 children before travelling and settling in North Sydney, where she completed her family of 17 children. First and foremost, Lucy was a loving mom to her 17 children. She loved her prayers and she prayed for many friends and loved ones. She enjoyed cooking and baking bread, a good game of cards with family and friends, and enjoyed her Saturday night dances. She never lost her love for her home town in Newfoundland. Lucy had an infectious smile and was a kind and gentle person. Lucy’s family extended five generations. She was member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
Lucy is survived by 15 children; daughters; Roseleen (the late Tom) Collier, Mary (Alex) Campbell, Phyllis (Steven) Clarke, Carrie (Tom) Boutilier, Christine (Melvin) Devoe, Betty (Sheldon) Burton, Louise Smith; and sons; Lawrence (Judy), Garf (Louise), George (Elaine), Gerald (Sharon), Simon (Mary), Bernie (Cecilia), Paul (Glenda), and Kenny (Susan). She was also survived by a brother Paul Collier and sister Bernie Organ from St Albans, Newfoundland. Lucy is also survived by 46 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Lucy was predeceased by her husband of 62 years Lawrence Long; son Eric Long; daughter Mabel (Connie) Scott; and grandson Chad Smith; her sisters Susan House, Mary Davis, Nora House, all from Newfoundland and Margaret Cox, North Sydney; her brothers John, Simon and Abe all from Newfoundland.
The family would like to send special thanks to the staff of Taigh Solas and Dr. Hickey for their loving and caring support. They treated mom as their own and went above and beyond her expectations.
Visitation for Lucy will be held Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney at a later date. Reception to follow in the church hall.
