Oliver Green

GREEN, OLIVER WILLIAM (SMILES) - 1913 -2015; Mr. Oliver W. Green of Ingalls Head Grand Manan Island, NB passed away peacefully at the Grand Manan Hospital Wednesday January 21, 2015 with his family by his side. He was born the son of the late Ottiwell and Nettie (Brown) Green at Ingalls Head. Smiles as he was known by most was a name he acquired early in life because of his heartwarming smile that he shared with everyone he met and his smile stayed with him all of his life. His life that he lived over one hundred and one year’s saw Smiles live life to the fullest. He grew up in a large family and learned the lessons in life at an early age. His life’s work included fishing, operating heavy equipment, picking up odd jobs, and later he will be remembered for his work at the Department of Transportation as an equipment operator where running the road grader was his expertise. Finding the love of his life and marrying her in 1939, Alice and Smiles built their home at Ingalls Head where they raised their family with love. The home was the gathering point for family and friends to stop in and say hi, share some stories and laughter and a cup of coffee, snack and even sometimes a lobster chowder Smiles cooked himself. Retirement years were enjoyed by Smiles as he and Alice travelled and visited friends. Spending time at his hunting camp the “Pig & Whistle” sharing deer stories, teaching a younger Islander how to hunt, growing gardens, and digging clams were all activities he enjoyed. Building model boats, wind mills, and sleds were a passion that he shared with many as his models can be found far and wide and enjoyed by many as each had a unique story of how they came to be built. He is survived by his four sons; Loring (Valerie-Sis) of Saint John, Richard (Sharon) of Seal Cove, Wilbur (Linda) of Castalia, and Stuart (Raima) of Grand Harbour. One brother Liscombe Green of Grand Harbour, nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends that he made through his journey through life. He was predeceased by Alice (Ingalls), his wife of 68 years in 2007 and he missed her dearly since then. Three sisters; Viola Ingalls, Verona Cronk, and Nina Ingalls. Six brothers; Gleason, Sheldon, Vinton, Pearly, Earl, Donovan, and Jewett.
Visiting will take place at St. Paul’s Anglican Church Hall, Grand Harbour on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 pm.
