Peacefully, with his family by his side, at Vision Nursing Home on Friday, January 23, 2015, Andrew Thomas Cannon passed away at the age of 95.
Beloved husband of the late Mary Rita (MacNabb) Cannon (1997). Loving father of Andrea (Jack) VanRooyen, Garry (the late Judy 2012) Cannon, the late Glenda (2003) (the late Ben 1998) Huggett, the late Bill (1997) (Darlene) Cannon, Mike (Cheryl) Cannon, Jeanette (Dave) Carrothers. Cherished grandfather of 19 and great-grandfather of 18. Dear brother of Gertrude Watson and Joseph (Charlotte) Cannon, and brother-in-law of Agnes Cannon and James MacNabb.
Predeceased by infant daughter, Mary Margaret; infant son, Andrew Thomas; grandsons, Benjamin Todd Huggett, Garry Steven Huggett; brothers, Louis, James, Stratton and John; sister, Rita MacDonald; sisters-in-law, Jennie Cannon, Kay Cannon, Phyllis Cannon and Marion Hazelwood; and brothers-in-law, John Watson and Frank MacNabb.
Andrew served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders from 1939-1945, he led one of the first troops to the shores of Juno Beach on D-Day during the Normandy invasion. During his tour of duty he was sent overseas to England, Belgium, Holland, Germany and France. Along with his 3 sons and his son-in-law he returned to the beaches of Normandy for the 50th anniversary on D-Day where he was decorated by the mayor of Caen. Andrew returned home to P.E.I. and moved to Sarnia, ON, in 1950 where he worked as a carpenter with Local 1256 since 1953.
Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 10 a.m. at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, 1011 Oak Ave., Sarnia. Cremation will follow.
