John Mackenzie

MACKENZIE, JOHN GERARD
1930-2015
After a very brief illness, John Gerard “Jack” Mackenzie of Woodwards Cove, Grand Manan Island passed away peacefully at the Grand Manan Hospital on January 31st.
Born on June 5th, 1930. Jack was a loving Husband, Father and Friend.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 51 years, Verna Rose Green of Woodward’s Cove and one son Chris Mackenzie of Saint John.
He was predeceased by his son John Gerard.
In his younger days, Jack enjoyed boating, fishing and found happiness in having a vehicle of any sort around the yard to tinker on. Always modifying them to preference. Jack especially liked working on the bulldozer with Barry as well as other tractors and heavy equipment the local guys would become stumped by and bring in for him to fix. Jack serviced local boats for many years as a diesel mechanic at General Marine Services Ltd. And was known locally as the Detroit Diesel Specialist. Following his retirement in 1989, he could be found most days working around the field, walking the skidoo trail with Verna or down at the Anchorage waiting for and watching his beloved Verna with their precious family dogs.
After suffering a stroke in 2009, Jack spent most of his days at home receiving tender loving care from Verna. He became an avid reader and spent his days reading, watching television and enjoying visits from friends.
Arrangements are being cared for by Ells Funeral Home, Grand Manan. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, February 4th from 2 to 4 pm. Memorial Service will take place from Community Life Church, Grand Harbour at 1:30pm on Thursday February 5, 2015 with Rev.Jeff Benson officiating. The Interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jack’s memory to the Heart & Stroke foundation or a charity of choice. Ells Funeral Home Inc., 1199 Route 776, Grand Manan, NB E5G 1G2. Condolences, messages of sympathy also may be sent to www.ells.ca or (506)662-3116.
