SMITH, Donald George – 92, formerly of Upper Wedgeport/Ellenwood’s Island, passed away peacefully at Nakile Home for Special Care on Wednesday, February 4, 2015. Born December 24, 1922 in Clark’s Harbour, he was a son of the late Spencer and Carrie (Penney) Smith. Donald made his living on the sea. He was one of the last dory fishermen on the LaHave Banks, having started fishing when he was 10 years old, retiring at 79. Aside from fishing, his passion was spending time on Ellenwood’s Island, as well as sailing and beachcombing. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 69 years, Elizabeth (Cottreau) Smith, as well as by their children, Donna (Sheldon) Swim, Upper Wedgeport; Ellie Smith (Jill Smith), Blanche; Leona (Thomas) Pothier, Upper Wedgeport; Liz Smith-Doucette (Harry), Bell Neck; George (Leona) Smith, Upper Wedgeport; 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Kathleen Abbie Atwood, Bay Side Home, Barrington and Freeda Newell, Newellton. Aside from his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Frederick, Norman and Vernon Smith, as well as by sisters, Elizabeth Nickerson and Josephine O’Connell. Visitation took place from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 7, both at H. M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, Pastor Craig Minard officiated. Interment in the Plymouth Cemetery. It was requested that there be family flowers only. Donations in Donald’s memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Tri-County Site of the VON.
