NEW GLASGOW – Ethel Elizabeth (Otter) Fraser, born Feb. 1, 1918 passed away peacefully at the Aberdeen Hospital on Feb. 6, 2015 following a brief illness.
Ethel was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, and was a daughter of the late Alexander (Sandy) F. and Minnie B. (Graham) Otter.
Ethel could be found at her cottage in Chance Harbour that she built with her husband in 1942.
She enjoyed many years, spending them on the beach, in the garden, and being a good neighbour.
She was a kind, gentle, happy, and giving lady who was well respected by all who knew her.
Ethel also enjoyed tennis, downhill skiing, and swimming well into her 80’s. She might even be seen on the cottage roof hammering down a shingle or two.
She enjoyed her Wednesday bowling league outings until age 96 and usually scored higher than her actual age.
Following her husband’s death, Ethel was devoted to singlehandedly caring for her mentally challenged son, Scotty who gave her great joy.
Ethel demonstrated an absolute love for her family and it is with great sadness that we announce her passing.
Ethel was predeceased by her husband, Robert Scott Fraser in 1977, her son Heywood Scott in 2009, her sisters Jen (William) Scaife, Dorothy (Edward) Hansford, Margaret (Richard) Davidson, and her brother Fred (Vera) Otter.
She is survived by her sister, Alice Rutland, Wabamon, Alta.; two sons: Robert Alexander, New Glasgow, N.S., and Barry James (Gail Doherty), Maquapit Lake, N.B.; grandchildren: Aaron Scott (Nicole), Rusagonis, N.B.; Matthew James (Emily), Ottawa, Ont.; and Janel Marie (Neil), Williams Lake, B.C.; and her great-grandchildren: Willow Elizabeth, Brooke Lauren, Aiden James, and Ethan Peter.
The family will receive friends at the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow, on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015 from 2 – 4 p.m.
