It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Josie MacKinnon, the last surviving member of her immediate family, on February 13, 2015 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the wife of the late Charles MacKinnon and daughter of the late Matthew and Margaret (Fanning) Murphy.
Josie is survived by her son Ted and his wife Viola, New Waterford; grandchildren, Teddy and Kellie Rose; one step-grandson, John Marshe. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by sisters Eileen, Shirley MacKenzie, Lillian Walker, and Sharon Murphy; brothers Ted and Bill Murphy and niece Wanda Paruch.
Josie was a member of Queen Elizabeth Chapter No. 14 Q.E.S. She received her 50 year Jewel in 2013 from Grand Chapter.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Monday, Feb. 16 from 6-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service will take place Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. in Calvin United Church with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. A luncheon will follow in the Rev. Duncan Roach Fellowship Room. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or the Canadian Cancer Society.
