It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, brother, and friend on Feb. 24, 2015 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with his family at his side.
He was born in Glace Bay to the late Charles J. MacDonald and Catherine MacNeil.
Neil is survived by his wife, Alana; sons, Troy (Debbie), Lingan, Mark (Susie), Calgary and Evan, Sydney; brothers, Malcolm (Martha), Charlie (Peggy) and Bernard (Cindy); sisters, Tibby (Bruce), Margie (Francis), Jessie (Les), Rita (John), Rose (Rick), Irene (Frank), Lilly, Anna (Steve), Cathy (Benoit); half siblings, John, Victor, Allan, Maria, Catherine, Camilla, (Francis and Clarence, deceased).
He was employed 30 years with Nova Scotia Power during which time he was an active union member with the IBEW local 1928, serving as president from 1989-1993. After retiring he accepted a position with NSCC (Marconi) as a Power Line Technician Instructor. Nicky enjoyed passing on his knowledge and loved to hear about the successes of his former students.
In his younger years he played goalie for Glace Bay Junior Miners (67/68). Nicky remained passionate about sports his entire life, coaching young players in New Waterford minor baseball and hockey leagues. Later in life he enjoyed golfing with friends.
He was a kind and generous man who loved his family dearly. He was always there to offer support and guidance. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
Nicky was a member of St. Leonard's parish, the Mount Carmel Auditorium Committee (currently St. Leonard’s Hall Committee) and an active member in the Cursillo Movement. He treasured his prayer group meetings and the friends he had there.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held today (Thursday, Feb. 26) from 6-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Friday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Ave., with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. A luncheon will follow at St. Leonard’s Parish Hall on Convent Street, New Waterford. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
